Through his work as a photographer, Gorka Postigo (Madrid, 1978) shows us his way of observing the world by creating a visual language that equates otherness with humanity. Through his lens, he bestows affection and respect to his subjects by approaching them with sensitivity and capturing them with grace. His images prove that vulnerability does not mean weakness.

We Are the Flowers in Your Dustbin encapsulates a ten-year exploration of queer identity, both in front of the camera and behind. To be queer is to blossom in a hostile environment with strength and beauty, something found in each of the works.

The faces and bodies featured in this exhibition are a mix of Postigo’s own and others, friends and loved ones, creating a sense of community. Like a game of mirrors — the photographer and subject see each other and recognize one another through reflection and empathy. “It’s been a process of self-discovery as both a photographer and a person. Finding my own voice, with the help of the people I’ve photographed and met.”

Portraying a vast range of queer people has been a conscious approach in Postigo’s practice. From the most vulnerable — like trans kids or LGTBIQ+ refugees — to actors and pop stars. “I’m fascinated by all these voices that stand up in their singularity, braveness, and beauty. They don’t only show me their truth and the way they are helping others in the community, they also help me understand myself better.”

The exhibition reflects his multiple interests, from art to fashion, portraits to landscapes — a range that has made him one of the most sought-after and outstanding photographers of recent years. His photography is beautiful yet raw. This difficult balance transforms the exhibition into a story laden with visual poetry and life force, necessary and inclusive, helping to charge toward the future, without ever letting its guard down.
