Work of the month
Félix Curto (Salamanca, 1967)
Huellas, 2005
Colour photography, 111 x 156 cm
The road, the travels and means of transport are recurring themes in the work of Curto. Through the approach to landscape, as seen in this Huellas (2005) made in Patagonia, the author approaches the world of emotions and persistent ongoing limits, well reflected in the mountains that close the horizon. The landscapes he portrays are deserted, they seem proper to the end of the world, and so his works take an air of melancholy and loneliness.
They are not photographs specially taken care of, or seem to capture transcendental themes a priori. In many cases, as in this work, they seem taken quickly from a car or truck, without a tripod. He shoots once and that "unique moment" is the prevailing before our eyes.
After studying Fine Arts in his hometown and focus, initially, to painting, he does two trips that set the course of his career: in 1995 to Germany and in 1996 to Mexico, where he remained several years to continue his studies. These moves cause large changes in the work of Curto, both in the new media used (photography and modified object) and in the expanding of his thematic record.
